In 1932, Bill O'Brien and Harry Norville (born Charles Henry Norville) brought together the surnames, and the Breville brand was created. The O'Brien family continued to develop the Breville business for three generations, Bill's son John O'Brien founded the Breville Research and Development center in the late 1960s, and his daughter Barbara led the Marketing department in the 1990s. Breville's R&D team has more than 100 active patents and has received more than 40 international design awards. In 1974, he completed the development of the toastie producer. The product was a huge success with its launch in Australia in 1974, it sold 400,000 units in its first year and made the Breville brand a household name in Australia. Soon after, Breville toast sandwich maker faced similar success in New Zealand and the UK.
