Hanes was established in 1900 by John Wesley Hanes (one of Winston-Salem's richest and most compelling money managers) at Winston, North Carolina under the name Shamrock Knitting Mills.
He kicked the bucket of heart inconvenience in 1903. In 1911, Shamrock Knitting Mills fabricated another plant at third and Marshall Streets; it was sold in 1926 and involved by a Cadillac business after a bigger plant was based on West fourteenth Street. Known as Shamrock Mills, the first structure was recorded on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Shamrock Knitting Mills was named Hanes Hosiery Mills Company in 1914.
